7th Gen Intel Core i7 Kaby Lake

Lotus Launches an Intel Kaby Lake Laptop

The Next-Generation Intel “Kaby Lake” Core i7

Intel recently released some of its Kaby Lake processors — officially known as 7th Generation Intel Core Processors — to computer manufacturers. More processors are yet to come for desktops or full power laptops like the popular Eclipse 650. For now, Lotus is proud to offer one new 7th gen CPU, and it’s available now.

This new processor is faster than its predecessor, offering fast clock speeds of up to 3.5 GHz on its dual core design. It also features much better graphics performance thanks to the built-in Intel HD Graphics 620. This new processor allows the Solstice 540 to smoothly run 4K streaming videos and movies, as well as virtually any task for business and home. You can even do some light gaming thanks to the impressive improvements Intel has made with these new chips.

Better Battery Life with Kaby Lake

Kaby Lake processors integrated in the Solstice 540 are designed to offer the best possible battery life without sacrificing performance. These 7th generation Intel processors have a unique power saving design. This allows the chip to use very little power when running basic tasks like word processing or web browsing. New Computers with Ubuntu 16.04

Ubuntu 16.04 Computer LogoIntroducing the new Ubuntu 16.04

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS “Xenial Xerus” brings a host of new features to the Ubuntu table. Ubuntu Linux – an open source, free operating system – has seen lackluster releases in recent years, with few noteworthy changes letting it stand out from other Linux distributions. Xenial Xerus, however, finally calls attention to some long-requested details, making Ubuntu 16.04 a welcomed (and much needed) release. With this new release, an Ubuntu 16.04 computer becomes a realistic choice for people who are thinking about switching away from Windows. Here are some of the new features.

Get an Ubuntu 16.04 computer

At Lotus, we like to offer choices to our customers. All our computers come with Windows, but some are available with elementary OS (which is based on Ubuntu). If we offer elementary OS on a model you like, we can install Ubuntu 16.04 upon request.

Some Lotus computers with Ubuntu 16.04 available include our Solstice 540 laptops, and Astra desktops. Or if you’re looking for a custom desktop, we can install Ubuntu for you as well. Just let us know if you’re interested in an Ubuntu 16.04 computer and we’ll help!

Now you can move the Unity launcher

Linux is famed for its sometimes overwhelming customization options, but Ubuntu’s Unity platform – designed with smartphones, tablets, and notebooks in mind – tended to fall behind in options. This was especially true with the Unity Launcher, which was locked permanently to the left edge of the screen. With Xenial Xerus, though, the launcher can now be moved to the bottom of the screen, allowing users to decide on what space is more comfortable for them.

No more online search results in Unity Dash

Unity Dash (the Ubuntu equivalent of the Windows File Explorer) was bogged down by internet search results whenever the user would attempt to look for files, including local desktop searches. Due to search data being collected from these file searches, privacy concerns arose among Linux users. These concerns prompted Ubuntu to take action, and as of Ubuntu 16.04 online search results are disabled by default in Unity Dash.

Ubuntu Software Center is replaced by GNOME Software

Considered a resource-heavy and unreliable piece of software, the Ubuntu Software Center had long overstayed its welcome in the Ubuntu OS. As of Ubuntu 16.04, the Software Center is replaced with the GNOME Software application, allowing for a much smoother, more reliable experience for the user. This helps an Ubuntu 16.04 computer user have an easier time downloading and updating apps.

Several pieces of software have been updated for this Ubuntu release, including:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird 45.0
  • Linux Kernel 4.4
  • Python 3.5
  • LibreOffice 5.1
  • Chromium 48
  • Firefox 45
  • Docker 1.10

In addition the GNOME Calendar is now included by default, another inclusion from the GNOME project to help push Ubuntu towards a sleeker experience.

A better Ubuntu

For both Ubuntu veterans and curious new users alike, Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus is a refreshing and considerable improvement over past Ubuntu releases. Marrying the simplicity of Unity Ubuntu with the modernity of more up-to-date Linux distributions, Xenial Xerus is truly an Ubuntu to get excited about.
